A cotton cleaning machine. The saw gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1792 and has greatly assisted in the development of cotton growing in America (see Ginning) -

3 Double Rib Gin
A gin used in the American cotton districts for ginning half-opened bolls and bolls not opened at all. The cotton from this gin is known as " hollies." -
4 Huller Gin
A gin used for ginning cotton gathered with the bolls. -
5 Bollies Cotton
Cotton obtained from the half-open or small bolls. These half-opened bolls, and the bolls that do not open at all, are usually ginned on a "double-ribbed " huller gin. -
6 Boweds Cotton
Is Uplands cotton from Georgia, Virginia and Alabama. Principally used for a good type of weft yarn from 30's to 40's; usually very clean. The term originally meant the cottons cleaned by the " bow gin," but now all the medium weft cottons grown in the above districts go under this name. -
7 Moina Cotton
Commercial variety of a prolific Upland cotton, having a fine, long staple. It is somewhat obsolete because it is difficult to pick and gin. The bolls are abundant. -
8 Roller Gin
This is the oldest existing machine used for removing the seed from cotton fibres. The machine consists mainly of two rollers, geared one above the other. The fibres are drawn between these while the seeds remain behind on the feed side. -
